I am delighted to have stumbled onto the site. Those photos and stories take me back to a very pleasurable experience in the early days of my broadcasting career. I started at CKSO as a weekend anchor and reporter in late 1979 or early 1980 and then moved on to take over the 6 o’clock desk from Mike Cranston after convincing News Director Garry Janz to give me a shot. I worked with Joe Bowen and Frank Salive.
When CKSO TV and Mid-Canada merged they shipped me off to Ottawa to run the CHRO bureau there and read our MCTV Newswatch newscasts. I returned briefly to Sudbury to work with Don Chapman, Tony Pooley, Chris Duncan, Peter Williams, Peter Mallette (with whom I worked at ATV in Halifax), Sandy Campbell, Sue Schiavo (now Susan Hay at Global Toronto) and Barry Johnston before heading to Halifax for the bulk of my career. In fact Mike Cranston and Joe Bowen were the morning team on CHFX radio in Halifax before Joe headed off to Toronto. I learned a lot from Garry Janz and Operations Manager Larry Gavin (recently deceased). They certainly helped my career!
