Personalities
Robert Vairo
The ultimate in breaks came for Robert Vairo when only at the age of
15, he called up CKSO Radio as he wanted to "file a report" on his
basketball team having just won the collegiate championship.
He proved to have a natural talent when he actually signed off his
report like that of a professional. This impressed the people
at the station and lead to his first job in radio. That was in
the mid 1960's and lead to a career extending four decades.
Robert Vairo has served as an announcer, talk show host, producer, reporter and anchor.
Following two years at CKSO, Vairo moved on to various radio
stations in Montreal including CFOX, CKGM, CJAD 800, 940 News, and
Q92 FM (CFQR). Adding to his credits, he is also available for freelance radio announcer
and reader services.
Robert's experience lends itself to television where he spent time
in North Bay on CFCH TV. He has also been on the Weather Network, and
served as a reporter and
anchor at Montreal’s major English-language television news station
and CTV-affiliate, CFCF-TV for about 18 years until 1999. His
next move was to work as Morning Host at CIQC in Montreal.
Vairo holds a
Bachelor of Arts in Communications and a teaching degree.
Collaboration with
Concordia University’s Communications Department involved teaching
courses as far back as 1984 including Writing for Radio and
Television, Voice Production Techniques for Radio, News Sports and
Public Affairs for Radio and Television, and Techniques of Public
Communication for Radio, TV, and Public Relations.
Vario realized a great dream by establishing his own broadcast
school, The Montreal Radio School, offering a fast-track intensive radio or TV course to
get students launched into entry-level positions in the broadcast
industry. Today the school boasts having graduates in every English language radio station in
Montreal and three French stations in Quebec.
