Career
From hockey to radio and television to popular harness racing track
announcer, Frank Salive, with his own brand of style and accuracy,
has made a seemingly smooth transition between each stop. Today, he is highly
regarded in harness racing track circles.
Salive is on record as stating the most important aspect of race announcing is
giving everyone fair and equal treatment. In an interview with
Standardbred Canada, Salive says, "The lofty goal is to
satisfy the public, horsepeople, TV directors and management
simultaneously." Frank Salive also goes on to comment that the
biggest race call of his career is always the next one, and the
next, and so on. Frank earned the Standardbred Breeders and
Owners of Ontario's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000.
In a press release dated September 30, 2005, Western Fair Raceway
announced the appointment of Frank Salive as New Race Announcer.
Frank's earliest days of track announcing were at Sudbury Downs,
while he made the transition from Cambrian Broadcasting (CKSO) in
Sudbury.
At CKSO, Frank could be heard on AM and FM and seen on TV as news
and sports anchor. Prior to his days at Cambrian, network
assignments took him to the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics.
In his hockey career, Salive through 1972 to 75, was a junior hockey
goalie for the Peterborough Petes. During the 1973-74 season, the
team represented Canada at the 1st World Junior Hockey Tournament in
Leningrad, USSR. Frank was selected top goalie and picked up a
bronze medal in this unofficial tournament that helped set the stage for
the first
official World Juniors in 1977.
Salive went on to become a 10th round NHL draft choice in 1975 by
the Pittsburgh Penguins. He declined in favour of his
ambitions toward broadcasting and racing.
